My Advice to the GOP Today

JedediahVia Jedediah Bila at Breitbart News

What the House Should Do

The House should keep passing bills that fund the government (with the exception of ObamaCare). Let Harry Reid refuse them. At the same time, get on TV all day and night articulating what you’ve been fighting to fund. (Remember, more than half the country consistently hasn’t liked ObamaCare. The majority didn’t want a shutdown. You’re on the side of the American majority on both issues; don’t let the media convince people otherwise.)

About That Ted Cruz

Agree with his tactics or not, Ted Cruz has done something that few in D.C. are tough enough to do–he ran on something and is actually fighting to get it done. No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, you should value that. If we can’t count on elected officials to follow through on their promises, what’s the point of voting at all? Is this all just a game?

Also, I will remind you that the same conservative base that ushered in huge mid-term victories in 2010 (as a result of united opposition to ObamaCare) have a restored sense of confidence thanks to politicians like Ted Cruz and Mike Lee. That’s the big picture. That conservative base is essential to winning elections; they volunteer, mobilize voters, and do massive grassroots outreach. The GOP needs them badly. If they don’t know that by now, it’s time to wake up.

Learn From This

The public opinion battle on the shutdown could have been won months ago (and should have been). You have to own this messaging early and steadily. Offense, not defense. The GOP should hire ten solid messengers who get out in front of these fights and flood the networks, debunking media-contrived talking points. Own the argument from the start and it will be much harder for the Left to distort your goals and policy agenda. Hire these people TODAY.

Also, presenting a clear alternative to ObamaCare is a must. The GOP has vocalized pro-free market alternatives–purchasing insurance across state lines, patient-centered reforms–but where was the marketing on them? Where was the comprehensive, well-planned, well-organized alternative? Without that, you run the risk of appearing to complain about something without offering solutions. If you have the solutions–and I know you do–why aren’t they front and center?

About That Compromise

For too long, compromise has meant that the Right consistently caves to the Left’s demands. That’s not compromise; it’s weakness. Where was Barack Obama’s love of compromise when he shoved ObamaCare through with no GOP support?

ObamaCare is bad economic and health-care policy. The GOP has a responsibility as a supposedly pro-growth, pro-free market, pro-opportunity, limited-government party to battle that law. Otherwise, what do they stand for?  And for those saying, “Well, let’s just let ObamaCare fall on its own,” are you prepared for the economic consequences of that? Are you confident that we will be able to roll back this enormous disaster once it gains traction?

This isn’t just about winning elections; it’s about fighting for the future of the country. There are moments that define who you are and what you stand for. This is one of them, GOP.

My advice to the GOP. Find some backbone and fight! I have to believe that collectively we understand the mathematics of how a well managed Government enterprise must function. Teach that.. that is our method. Teach that theft is wrong. Teach what theft is. The conservative owns the high moral ground. Fight!

I recently paid the penalty and closed my 401k plan. Why leave money lying around so Big Brother can steal it from me? That’s what’s going to eventually happen to everyone’s retirement savings after the Socialists like Osama bin Obama get done fouling up the nation.

One thing that continues to bother me is Mr. Obama keeps saying the debt is coming down, yet he also is asking for an increase in the debt limit. Why is no one in Congress, the DC reporter pool, or the general public not asking him point blank how it can be if the debt is going down, then why the need for an increase in the debt limit?

Festus

Maybe he means the annual debt is comimg down but the overall debt is increasing.

PaulE

Correct. The only reason the annual debt is lower is because of the sequester, which he and the Democrats are trying to eliminate. Otherwise, our annual debt would still be on an upward trajectory.

Very good, astute observation. Anyone who makes common sense, and can add gets it, however, we seem to have few of these folks in the government or media. Thanks for your thoughtful analysis.

I clicked on to read “5 Reasons not to Invest in your 401 (k) today” and I got this article from Jedediah. While I agree with everything she says, I would really like to read the reasons why investing in my IRA to the max might not be a good idea.

Obama and his Democratic counter parts were in discussion on the possible acquisition of our 401ks Ira’s, and savings accounts to save us. Remember Argentina. Something to think about.

I have also heard this. “National-izing” all of the funds those of us who were “lucky” enough to save. Many people have sacrificed to SAVE for retirement, vacations, etc. Their money should not be confiscated.

We must remember that social security was in the black until Pres. Johnson and Jim Wright (both democrats) unlocked the social security funds to so called spend on the Vietnam war, B.S. They and most of these government hacks have spent our money to get themselves elected. I’m sick of these politicians saying there’s no money in social security, well dah, who spent it all? They need to pay back all the money they stolid out of social security with interest and they would have more than enough to pay senior citizens.

Garry,
I am with you until the point where you say “They need to pay back all the money they stole out of SS with interest”

There is only one problem with that sentiment … and it is a huge one
“They” have no money!
“They” are the United States Congress

If “They” are to pay back the money they stole with interest… “They” have to do it with YOUR money!!!
“They” will be only too happy to do that. After all, it is how “They” have been doing business for ?? 50 years!

What needs to happen is that Congress has to pay back Social Security, with interest, by ceasing to spend any further money on other programs. Congress needs to stop funding Governments that do not even like America! Congress needs to stop spending on themselves and their friends and families

IF that ever happens… Then Congress can pay back… STILL with YOUR money! That is how money works,Garry.

America has spent SO MUCH money foolishly over many decades that America is a DEBTOR NATION!!!! America IS BROKE!, BANKRUPT, A Dead Beat Nation. ALL because of Congress. About 535 persons and those that they control have caused this to stay in power.

Entitlement spending has squandered all of America’s once immense resources. Just recently I saw a number…47%… of Americans are collecting public money in some manner. That is NOT sustainable

Bev Adams

Is Social Security considered an entitlement? Is it included in the 47%? I hope not, I am tired of Social Security being included in entitlements. We were made to pay into it when we could have personally saved the money on our own.Ba

I agree with Mr. Conley. Those money vampires on capitol hill had wanted for years to get into that Social Security Money and like he said they did and continue to do. Jedediah, you have hit the nail on the head and I can’t believe you are about the only one who puts it all in perfect context. I have been saying about the same thing for months and getting myself so annoyed watching the stupid games the politicians insist on playing. The Republicans continue to make themselves look like a bunch of sniveling fools who can’t seem to muster enough courage to strike back at the opposition.
Having said that, I honestly believe much of it is due to the fact that the Republican party has been compromised some time ago by infiltration of progressive/communist infiltrators.

Great article! The biggest weakness of the GOP / Conservatives lies in the mass messaging. We do not communicate in ways that is picked up by the average voter. The leftist charlatans just keep repeating unsubstantiated slogans while conservatives seek reasoned explanations. Better to counter slogans with slogans to reach those with a 5 second focus limit. This is a street fight, not a parlour game ! Dick

Jedediah, I have wondered for a few years now why the Republicans remain silent after being slashed verbally by Pres. Obama and the Democrats….each time Pres. Obama would be on TV, I would be out there countering verbally everything he is misleading the public with….or any of the democrats in Congress who give interviews or make comments….but the Republicans seem to let things slide and maybe I might see something on tv on sunday if I have Foxnews on….I constantly hear lies or misleading statements on CNN and other channels that just burn me up…almost as if the Republicans are trying to fail or…God forbid, they have been paid off by the democrats…lots of sneaky deals going on..like Reed and Boehner having a private meeting with the president to get themselves off Obamacare…rats! all of them are rats!

Republican refusal to take care of the government shutdown and soon the debt limit with a plan the average American can understand as long as “Obama Care” exists is plain and simple extortion.

Republicans and Conservatives that consider Obama a bully have apparently forgotten Dick Cheney and Rumford and their dictatorial governing.

It looks like neither the Republicans nor the Conservatives have ever known someone who could not buy health insurance or be treated for a preexisting condition. But then again wealthy people are often totally out of touch with the common man.

Bottom line, no one in Congress or the President nor any of their staffs should be paid until they solve their differences. Once again these arrogant elected officials are only interested in their own selfish ploitical interests and not the people they hurt with their childish behavior.

Health insurance does not mean health care, Read the bill you still pay for a percentage of the bill, Are you going to pay the premiums of the the ones can’t afford to? If you work for a living you are. Why do you think the premiums for the affordable health care act are based on earned income only? tThose that can’t afford the premiums will have them paid for by (guess who) us. Frankly I’m tired of paying the bill for those that don’t pay for their own.

Thats what medicare and medicaid do now. Wake up this thing is not designed to help anyone, Its designed to destroy private health care. Idiots that do not like this system should move to France or Canada where they have so called free health care. Godd luck getting any surgery you might need to survive.

Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld are long gone from office, and they have zero relevance to the current topic.

And personally, I’m pretty tired of the old chip-on-the-shoulder mindset that implies that conservatives and Republicans are always rich. I can name a great many very rich Democrats and progressives. Money doesn’t make a person more or less valuable–only character does that.

Our leaders have done a lot of damage to the American people in recent years–they practice politics of division and hatred, of rudeness and sneering, of name-calling and disrespect. Politics has become an ugly and contagious disease, and it drags us all down. And to top it all off- the leaders can’t even be civil to each other long enough to carry out the people’s business. It’s time for them to act like adults and work for the American people.

Thanks, Kate. I have been a conservative for a very long time, and I am not rich. I have paid my way through life, by working. Sometimes, I did not get what I wanted, because I could not afford it! I had to act like a grown-up and save my money, or sometimes just forget it. Many people chose not to buy health insurance, that does not mean that they cannot get health care. We have many programs already in place for indigent people. Have you ever talked to a doctor, and found out how much of their practice, or that of their hospitals is charity work? If you listen to the Progressives, you would think we have people dying in the streets for lack of health care – no one in the United States can be denied health care, health insurance so far must be purchased. The government runs just about everything poorly, why would we want to turn over our lives to them. Have you ever wondered why a group of lawyers in Washington think that they know how to do everything better than the private sector, whether its building cars or delivering services to the public? They don’t, but they are arrogant and ignorant, and there is a great many in our population who want something for nothing.

Strongly agree with Ms. Bila’s recommendation on what the Republican controlled House of Representatives (the People’ representatives) should do, both pass funding bills (less the ACA and any other authorizations that don’t make sense), then get on every talk show there is and publicize it (every day, every night).

When it comes to “entitlements” the GOP should not treat them as welfare payments; some maybe, but most are not. Social Security is not an entitlement, it is a payout of a forced saving program that every working American, and his/her employer, have paid into over their working life. Note the “his/her employer” statement, it is very important. Only one employer has been able to exempt itself from actually paying its manditory matching payment – the Federal Government, and it has been done with a Congressional accounting trick of annually applying worthless (paper) payment into the Social Security account. One of our long-time Democrat House members estimated the amount the US Government owed the account was about $2.0T.

Bud Wood

As much as your comments make sense, many years ago the SCOTUS ruled that (among other things) social security is a tax. It is not a savings program and there is no vslustion in any account.

PaulE

Reply to  Bud Wood

Absolutely correct. It’s amazing that so many people continue to hold onto the erroneous belief that Social Security is some sort of savings vehicle, with the money they’ve paid in being somehow earmarked for them at retirement. That we keep seeing “I paid into Social Security for X years and now I want my money back” over and over again, is really a testament to how effective the con job has been on the public.

Social Security is a tax, plain and simple. There is NO savings component. The money collected is immediately paid out to current retirees. Any surplus is noted by the Treasury and then placed in the general obligations fund of the government, where the government spends it for normal operating expenses. The Treasury keeps track of this whole process via electronic spreadsheet entries designated as “special purpose I.O.U.s. These I.O.U.s have NO market value, cannot be traded on the open market and exist largely to give the appearance to the public that the money still exists somewhere. It doesn’t! It’s been spent. The only value these I.O.U.s have is whatever the government assigns to them. Since they have NO value on the open market, the real value of these I.O.U.s is really zero. However, they have a public relations value to our federal government, so the pretense continues.

They should pay that, and pay back, with interest, what they have ‘borrowed’ from the fund over the past 13-15 years to meet financial obligations… It isn’t a piggy bank that they can break into when they feel the need; its not their money.

Jedidiah Bila is right: the Republicans/Conservatives need to concentrate on getting their message out and determine who might be their best messengers like Newt Gingrich or Jim De Mint etc. Get out there on the Capitol steps often and hold press conferences and repeat the conservative message as the newspapers won’t cover them. Some media may show up besides Fox News. Obama is a bully and a liar, and conservatives need to continue to stand up to him as to any schoolyard bully.

I keep wondering what Obama and Michelle are teaching their children. They seem like very nice girls now, but will they become warped in time? What a shame and a loss.

Bud Wood

Concentrating on getting this and that message out regarding the federals is an exercise in futility. “Battle lines” are already drawn and most people are already fixed in their beliefs. Anyway, the people in the federal government are shooting themselves in their feet and sooner or later they will blow themselves away. Why waste time on them when it will be a miracle if the federal system is still viable by the end of 2016?

Concentrate on your local and state governments. That is where the really important things will be. Yes, I realize that many people think that local police, fire fighters, roads, schools, etc., are federal funded but that’s incorrect. The local governments are the important governments and that’s the concept which needs to be the message!

Thank you Jedediah for spelling out what NEEDS to be done. The Patient Care Affordable Act is not even close to being affordable or caring. We must continue to educate and remain true to conservative issues.

We need to bring Mr. Gingrich back into the mix. We also need to close our borders and stop the flow of illegals who continue to drain our tax dollars and cause so much voter fraud. Think of how much damage this despot can do in three more years. ” Those who fail to learn from HISTORY are condemned to repeat it “. What other leader enacted laws without parliamentary involvement ? Look what that lead to. Perhaps eight out of ten of today’s youth are unaware of the dangers of a despotic leader. Soon they will learn; too well.

Liberal Propaganda:

thought you might be interested in this:

Had a brief conversation with an old friend who I always assumed was rather conservative due to the fact that he is a business owner, and he agrees that the state of Michigan has been destroyed by liberal policies and the unions, however, I have discovered his true mindset recently.

As you know, liberal voters are marketed to by their own party, and Obama care is being twisted into meaning something completely different to them. According to my friend, Obama care is only a way for the progressive to “level the playing field” and force large employers like Walmart to have to offer health insurance to their employees. According to my friend, the profits that Walmart has made are “obscene” and they don’t offer health insurance. I don’t know that this is true, but he seems to believe that. He says he knows people who worked there and that they were given applications for Medicaid by the human resource department of Walmart. Again, I do not know if this is true.

When I tried to politely point out that Obama care is not going to accomplish what he thinks, he shut me out and refused to talk about it further. Typical liberal response. So I just wondered if your listeners and your subscribers have heard this twisting of the facts? Perhaps that is why so many people voted for Obama and think that Obama care is the solution to everything.

According to my friend, he is a good hearted business man who wants to offer health care to his employees, and I applauded his efforts, but he claims that others are not running their businesses the way he runs his, and in his mind this law is a way to FORCE others to have to offer benefits to their employees (i.e. to make everyone EQUAL). As I tried to point out, there are free market solutions to the problem, but he did not want to hear it. I also tried to point out that this law will place untold burdens on every business, including his own, down the road. Again he did not want to even discuss it. I also pointed out that he took all the risk that his business would not be successful and did he really want the government to force him to have to offer the TYPE of healthcare that the government decided was correct. He did not want to discuss it. I told him that he will have a nasty surprise down the road when he is still forced to pay penalties because as a small business he will never be able to afford to offer a healthcare policy that includes all the bells and whistles that the government would now demand. Again, he did not want to hear it.

it will be very interesting to me to find out how he feels when he is penalized down the road. My feeling is that people like him will be completely shocked to find out he will have to pay penalties, and that people like him will be the ones screaming the loudest that “they did not sign up for this”. He is too small to have the political clout to be able to get an exception like the Service Industries unions and congress themselves.

But the liberal propaganda machine has successfully convinced democrats that this is just a way to make everyone EQUAL and make all businesses EQUAL.

your thoughts??

It’s been about 5 1/2 years ago, but I worked for Walmart in Kalamazoo, MI. I’ve also worked for Fortune 500 companies. I can tell you that in my opinion, the health insurance plan I had there was as good or better than any other plan I’ve had. It’s a bit harder to pay for it, because it still caries the same cost and the pay isn’t as good, but the plans were excellent. Way better than I have now. Even part time workers were offered some sort of health insurance. The only people I know with better plans are government employees.

Government privatization.

There is a lot of debate about privatizing certain functions of the government. Why is there such a debate in the first place? After all the inefficiency of government (federal) is due to 536 bosses. (congress and the president). States support their own number of bosses. Another problem with so many bosses is that each boss has their own ideology or philosophy, such as socialism vs capitalism or individualism vs a nanny state. When a stalemate occurs, the process of compromise begins which is fine except when the Constitution is defaced in the compromise.
What usually happens is that something under government control is transferred to the private sector. What we have now is taking what is private and putting it under government control. The Patient Protection and affordable Health Care Act also know as Obamacare has taken our good health care and put it under the control of 536 Bosses.
Public utilities commissions were setup so that utilities could operate as a monopoly in the best interest of the customer. Who is going to protect us against the monopoly government if it is not the Supreme Court.

My observation:
Mr. O won a popularity contest. For that reason he believes the rest of the country must obey each and all of his and his political party’s dictates.

He does not understand the Presidency only gets you the seat at the head of the table. A President must lead and must lead by persuation.

For my self, dictates and Dictators offend me. I will resist dictates and Dictators with every fiber of my body. This is required of each citizen if our Republic shall continue to exist. If I am wrong, persuade me.
