AMAC Action Staffers and Chapter Members Attend Florida State School Board Meeting Discussing Critical Race Theory

FloridaWritten by: Shelly Broaderick and David Robinson

AMAC Action had a presence at a key state school board meeting in Jacksonville, Florida on June 10, where the board was to vote on whether to ban critical race theory as directed by Governor Ron DeSantis. AMAC Action Advocacy Administrator Shelly Broaderick and Member Correspondent David Robinson, along with local Chapter members, attended the meeting and filed the following report:

The meeting was kicked off with the Pledge of Allegiance. Not surprising, members of Black Lives Matter (BLM) and Northland Coalition, who were also in attendance, did not participate in the pledge.

Tom Grady, a member of the state school board introduced an amendment to ban critical race theory (CRT) from being taught in Florida’s schools, partly on the basis that it is largely an interpretation of events versus the events themselves. This amendment passed unanimously.  Mr. Grady also pointed out Florida Statute Section 1003.42, which requires schools to teach about slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the civil rights movement, and the contributions of women, African American and Hispanic people to our country’s shared history, a point echoed by Governor DeSantis.

Awards were given to some faculty members, which one would usually interpret to be a positive action. However, these faculty members were careful to interject the words ‘equity’ and ‘inclusion’ in their acceptance speeches. So, CRT may be banned in Florida schools, but these teachers, through the use of popular Leftist rhetoric, have made it clear they will continue to attempt to perpetuate this identity-based Marxism.

Activists in attendance from BLM and Northland Coalition supporting CRT were organized, engaged, and very vocal. Their talking points centered around racial justice and teaching “the whole truth.” It should be noted how well these organizations anticipate conservative talking points and how they look for opportunities to advocate. They are also adept at redefining the meaning of good words and phrases to make their positions appear to be nearly irrefutable.

Quisha King, a member of the Moms for Liberty organization, gave a very well-articulated and highly focused speech to the Board members in opposition of CRT. Mrs. King is a black female entrepreneur. You would think the Leftist activists in attendance would applaud her success, especially in the face of her alleged highly oppressed intersectional status in America. Instead, she was mocked and called names, like ‘puppet’ and ‘sellout’ at the meeting.  Mrs. King also briefly introduced the topic of school choice to the discussion and credited this option for her success.

In addition to AMAC Action and Moms for Liberty, conservatives were also represented by the Protect Our Children Project at the meeting.
