‘Buy American, Deregulate, Innovate’ Agenda to Drive Comeback From COVID-19: Navarro

White House trade adviser and Defense Production Act (DPA) coordinator Peter Navarro said on May 17 that the essence of the Trump administration’s plan to rebuild the U.S. economy is to “buy American, deregulate, and innovate.”

Navarro, Director of the White House Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy, told NBC’s “Meet the Press” and ABC’s “This Week” that President Donald Trump’s administration plans to pursue policies to bring key supply chains back to the United States, as concerns continue to mount about the country’s dependence on China, now amplified by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) virus pandemic.

“This president built up the most beautiful economy in three and a half years, and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) crippled that in 30 days,” Navarro told NBC’s Chuck Todd on Sunday, referring to the impact of the CCP virus, commonly known as the novel coronavirus, on the economy.

“He is going to rebuild this economy based on three things: buy American, deregulate and innovate,” he said. “We’re going to start by bringing home the pharmaceutical and medical supplies chains here, using things like the DPA and other private sector enterprises.”

Navarro said that the White House’s supply chain efforts will also focus on creating domestic jobs as the United States sees rising unemployment as a result of virus containment measures.

Nearly 36.5 million Americans have filed claims for unemployment benefits since mid-March, with 2.981 million for the week ending May 9, according to the Labor Department.

“That is where this Trump ship is heading—it’s jobs, it’s buy American, it’s make stuff here,” Navarro said. “And for every service sector job we may lose in this transition, we’re going to replace those with manufacturing [jobs], and things are going to be great.

“Bring the jobs home and make it here,” Navarro told ABC, adding that Trump’s buy American, deregulate, and innovate agenda will benefit both the economy and national security.

The White House trade adviser made reference to the swift production of ventilators by General Motors and ventilator firm Ventec Life Systems on “domestic soil” after Trump invoked the DPA late March.

“We had a serious crisis back at the time. This was a miracle and in some sense a microcosm for the future,” Navarro told NBC. “Using the DPA … 700 pieces go into that ventilator and General Motors was able to use its manufacturing platform to go out to its supply chain to replicate virtually all of those here domestic soil.”

“So using the DPA, we were able to move at an incredible speed, innovate, and bring ventilator production right here on domestic soil,” he added.

“We can replicate that throughout this economy, repurposing our factories,” Navarro told ABC. “This is the jobs president, the innovation president, the manufacturing president, and this is how we’re going to get through the other end of this—this crisis here.”

Navarro’s remarks came just days after Trump said the pandemic highlights the vulnerabilities of supply chains whose parts are located in different parts of the world.

“We have a supply chain where they’re made in all different parts of the world,” Trump told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo Thursday.

“And one little piece of the world goes bad and the whole thing is messed up,” Trump said, referring to the virus outbreak in Wuhan, China.

“We should have them all in the United States,” the president, who has long pledged to bring manufacturing back from overseas, said of key supply chains.

The president told reporters Thursday during a visit to a Pennsylvania distributor of medical equipment that his goal is “to produce everything America needs for ourselves and then export to the world, including medicines.”

It should be required that Amazon,eBay and any other on line retailer show country of origin/manufacture on their products.

The problem is with “American” companies including retailers. They want it cheap. They approve cheap, badly-designed products that will break so you will have to buy them again in a short period of time. The ONLY goal is to maximize profits now even if it means eliminating American jobs or supporting the economies of other nations (including nations that would destroy us).

I agree that we should make our own things. I don’t understand why Navero touted General Motors for what they did when Ford did it of their own accord and didn’t need and pushing or negotiating by the government.

To Nell-
Our “greed” is what BUILT America ! It drives competition, to be the best at what you do. Because of our :greed” we were able to invent and build products that other Countries want. If you don’t trade with other Countries, how do you sustain a Country? Ask Cuba,Iran, and many others. China learned that even though they are a Communist Country, they could NOT exist without trade. Unfortunately they continue to steal EVERY Countries technologies in the process.
Greed is good , Socialism is bad and destroys the citizens and freedom.
BY the way , do you buy Products at Wal Mart, Target, Kohls, or a car? The consumer, YOU, always looks for the cheapest product. That BUILT Japan and China among others. If the generation behind us didn’t want everything at 20 years old that we didn’t get until we were 40, maybe Americans would pay more and do with less.
I hope we can count on you to pay more and buy American?

Locally, we have started “DO NOT BUY CHINESE”….if at least 50% of America stops purchasing products from China, we can get the American companies over there to come back to America when they can’t sell their products. We have to be diligent and really stick to our guns….I will not reward a country who has brought such economical and health problems to America…China needs to be punished. I would also like to see our government nationalize every Chinese owned parcel of land or business in America…and that would certainly hurt them as they are buying up America.

We used to have bumper stickers years ago–still “fits”: “America: love it or leave it.” While doing so, keep praying, trusting God, stay in God’s Word.

One thing that would really help is if all websites had to clearly state where the product they are selling is made. I’ve been trying to buy American and it’s hard. Distributed in America or shipped in America (duh) are favorite obfuscations as to where something is made. Hard to find the answers. Take out 10 stupid regulations and put in that one.

You notice that all of the products that are moved to China are still sold here!. That is so some executives and shareholders will make more money for a while and then they move on leaving unemployment behind

I’ve been trying to buy all American, especially since this virus. It’s so hard, I wish there was a easy to decipher book or site for products made in America. The ones I’ve found make it so difficult to find a specific product. Lot of companies I’ve asked seem to sidetrack the question! Get frustrating

I would buy only products made in the USA but nearly impossible to get through all the information on products to find origin. Need a website to guide people to goods made here. The President and his advisors are so correct to bring production back home.
