The Left’s Sanctuary Cities Hurt Americans’ Safety

from – The Daily Signal – by Hans von Spakovsky

Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ announcement on Monday that the Justice Department will bar all sanctuary cities from receiving any grants or other federal funds from the department should be welcome news to Americans—especially those whose families have been victimized by criminal illegal aliens released by sanctuary cities like San Francisco.

As Sessions pointed out, Kate Steinle, a resident of San Francisco, was shot and killed two years ago by an illegal alien as a direct result of San Francisco’s policy of refusing to honor federal detainer warrants.

The killer, Francisco Sanchez, had seven previous felony convictions and the city released him from custody despite the fact that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had filed a detainer with San Francisco asking that he be kept in custody until immigration agents could pick him up.

Sanchez even admitted to a television reporter that the only reason he came to San Francisco was because of the city’s sanctuary policy.

Sessions also mentioned another such incident that happened just within the last two weeks.

According to the attorney general, Ever Valles, another illegal alien, was charged with the murder and robbery of a man at a light rail station.

The only reason he was on the street was because the city of Denver refused to honor a detainer that ICE had filed with the city and released him from the Denver jail in December.

Valles is just one of many such criminal aliens who are being loosed on the American public by the reckless policies of sanctuary cities.

ICE recently released the first of its weekly reports on cities that have refused to honor ICE detainer warrants, as mandated by President Donald Trump’s executive order, “Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States.”

The report details all of the local jurisdictions across the country from Florida to New York to Washington state that refused ICE detainers from Jan. 28 to Feb. 3 and released criminals from their jails rather than turn them over to the federal government for deportation.

The crimes committed by these illegal aliens, as outlined in a report covering just a single week, include: domestic violence, arson, aggravated assault, burglary, forgery, intimidation, possession of a dangerous weapon, intimidation, drug trafficking, sexual assault, homicide, and a host of other crimes. This is also no surprise.

As I have outlined before, prior reports by the Government Accountability Office that have reviewed the criminal histories of illegal aliens in federal, state, and local jails show a path of destruction and repeated criminal behavior by criminal aliens that is truly shocking.

There are literally millions of Americans like Steinle who have been victimized by crimes committed by illegal aliens that should not have happened and would not have happened if we actually enforced our immigration laws and if local jurisdictions cooperated with federal authorities instead of trying to obstruct them.

Sessions said that the American people “are justifiably angry” about these sanctuary policies that endanger them. They understand something that irresponsible local officials don’t seem to care about: “When cities and states refuse to help enforce immigration laws, our nation is less safe.”

The failure to deport criminal aliens like Valles puts “whole communities at risk—especially immigrant communities in the very sanctuary jurisdictions that seek to protect the perpetrators.”

The amount of federal grant money at stake is more than $4.1 billion, which the Justice Department distributes through its Office of Justice Programs.

Sessions said that all jurisdictions applying for such grants will have to certify that they are in full compliance with 8 U.S.C. Sec. 1373, which bans local and state jurisdictions from prohibiting their employees—including law enforcement—from exchanging information with the federal government over the citizenship status of any individual.

The American people certainly agree with what Trump and Sessions are doing. Sessions cited a poll in which 80 percent of Americans agreed that illegal aliens arrested by cities should be turned over to immigration authorities.

Sessions urged state and city officials to “consider carefully the harm they are doing to their citizens by refusing to enforce our immigration laws, and to rethink these policies.”

Hopefully, the added incentive of losing access to billions of federal dollars will help them “rethink” their rash sanctuary policies.

There is already a federal law on the books from the 1990’s (the fabled Clinton era that Democrats all drool over) that mandates state and local compliance with all existing federal immigration laws on the books. It makes such sanctuary cities and / or states illegal and punishable with jail time. So it is not a question of trying to persuade the politicians in these cities and states to change their so-called sanctuary policies. All these politicians are already breaking federal law. As such, it is simply a matter of how the federal government chooses to respond. Yes, the federal government should make as many federal grants and other disbursements to the states and cities conditional to full compliance with federal immigration laws and policies. However, the federal government should also charge and arrest a few high profile sanctuary mayors or governors for violation of the law. Put them on trial in federal court to drive the message home. That would quickly send a message to the Democrat politicians across the country that “rule of law” is back regarding enforcement of our existing federal immigration laws. Nothing motivates a politician of either party to change his or her tune like the very real threat of federal prison time. As long as the Democrat politicians in these sanctuary cities and states don’t face any potential downside risk, and they don’t politically since they are ALL in heavily Democrat voter strongholds, none of them will see a reason to modify their stance. Arresting and charging a few of them will quickly change that personal risk / reward equation for them. So it is all a matter of how far the Trump administration and his Department of Justice is willing to go to re-assert the rule of law in this country.

Imagine how the media would cover the news
If DiBlasio and Rahm Emmanuel and other such
Would actually be chargrd of a crime

Most of the mainstream media would portray it as “Facist Trump tries to undermine our democracy.” Anything but the truth would be reported.

We don’t need to limit the funds cut-off to just those grants given by the Dept. of Justice. One report said that TSA agents in one city were being prohibited from notifying ICE of illegals. The way to stop that is to cut off all Airports and Airways development funds from such jurisdictions.

I understand the liberal politicians wanting to keep as many illegals and criminals on the streets, its all about votes and their power over the public. But, there must be enough sane people in these cities that understand what’s going on. Where are they hiding? It is time that we all start to speak up before our great nation is completely destroyed.

Well for the most part they are all living outside the city, thus not voting for the city mayor etc.

What is wrong with Sanctuary Cities, Colleges and Communities?

Let me be clear on one thing. This country owes, in large part, its greatness to its immigrants. Their intellect, their work ethic, their culture and their spirit. When they came: fleeing war, famine, injustice, discrimination or whatever, they integrated into this society, adding their virtues and strength. They became Americans! Sure, they rightfully celebrated and honored their individual heritages, but they adapted and became Americans.

It seems today, that it is expected that America adapts to the immigrants. Government agencies, schools etc. have to become “multilingual” and “multicultural”. And that’s at great expense to the taxpayers that have to fund those agencies. The vital immigrants that came before, didn’t expect that pampering. They learned to communicate or have someone available to communicate, in the language of their adopted home. This type of attitude and policies, where its expected that we have to change to placate those who don’t understand our language or ways, no longer makes America the great “melting pot”. It was this melting pot, that helped to create America’s unique place in the world. These current policies, only serves to further divide us. Our real strength, is in the joining of all of our heritages and backgrounds, therefore becoming even more than what each contributor brought to the table.

Now the cry is to protect the “undocumented immigrants” that are here to only improve their lives. First let me say, that the use of “undocumented immigrant” only serves to lessen the truth of the matter. Calling an illegal alien an “undocumented immigrant” is akin to calling a drug dealer an “undocumented pharmacist” . Yes, I realize that statement is a bit of a stretch of the point, but a crime is a crime. Furthermore, protecting or sheltering, an illegal alien , (oh sorry, an undocumented immigrant), is at the least, spitting in the face of EVERY immigrant that went through the lawful process of coming into this country. Honorable immigrants that waited in line at Ellis Island. Immigrants that had to pass a physical to come to this country. Immigrants that had a sponsor and or a job before they came here. Immigrants that got their visas and or “green cards” to come here. Those officials who establish “Sanctuaries” insult and demean every valued lawful immigrant that came before to this country. I would like to see what would happen, if I decided to pick and chose what laws I want to obey while in a “sanctuary” city like Philadelphia. The mayor of Philadelphia, indicates that he would take in all “undocumented immigrants” because that would make more money for Philadelphia. Hmmm, bet if I were to ignore or refuse to report a law breaker, because I would make money, I could be faced with charges of aiding and abetting. Mayors and leaders of those “sanctuary” cities and communities should be held accountable for disregarding the laws of this land. If not criminally, then at the very least financially!

Claude, that ” undocumented pharmacist” was no “bit of a stretch…”. It was right on and direct; couldn’t have been any clearer.

About time. Got to stop the idea of not following any law you don’t agree with, That’s anarchy!

I agree with this action. But, I feel what really needs to be done is arrest/prosecute the mayors of these cities and any other official going along with the mayor. IMO that would be a big deal.

along with that I agree with deporting every single illegal, but like above I feel if we really went after and busted the butts of the business/companies etc that hire them it would do more then anything else we can do. JMO

I agree with the portion about arrest and prosecution of the mayors and those who are involved in the actions to prevent the deportation of the criminal illegals. They are aiding and abetting a crime. Perhaps if they felt the result of their own actions they might think differently! As to the rest of what you suggest, I haven’t yet decided how I feel. Illegals who are criminals do need to go and stay gone. Perhaps there needs to be a closed military base reopened with barb wire and electrified fence as well as guard posts and put them in there. Provide staples and gardening seeds and tell them that’s all they’re getting – take care of themselves. Maybe then they would decide they didn’t want to come back here!

Of course they hurt America’s safety. They also weaken our society and divide us.

Which is exactly what the Liberal/Communist/Muslims want.

Read up on Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, the Eight Levels of Socialist Control and the 45 Goals of Communism in America. Toss in the Koran too. The how to destroy nations is contained therein.

Why elected officials want to protect criminals who are illegal immigrants
Escapes logic
That is unless they’re are pandering to a particular voting bloc

South American countries and Mexico in particular, have been emptying their prisons and sending them to the USA as refugees for years. It’s bad enough that they encourage their uneducated poor to come here. And our stupid politicians not only allow them to come but aren’t interested in having them assimilate, instead we allow them to speak Spanish, print government literature in spanish, allow tv and radio stations in Spanish so that I feel that California is now a province of Mexico!

Remember the Alamo? Do you think that war is over? Remember the Spanish-American War? Not over – Cuba is still there, and a thorn in the side of the US. Remember the Crusades? Not over. Iran wants the Ottoman Empire back. They’ll have to defeat Europe and their strongest allies – the US. It kind of makes you think about how foreigners came into this country and ousted the Indians. Only, this time, we’re the…[Indians]. (I apologize for my dark humor.)

Hank, the only real fault in your comment concerns Iran. Since Iran is a prodominatly Shite theocracy and Turkey a majority Sunni on again off again secular government, should Turkey obtain a Cahaliphate, it would likely be composed of Sunnis, not Shites.

Western sliver of California should be split off (called the Toxic State). Eastern 2/3 should be retained (call it Reagan Country).

Yes, let them. Arizona can use all of the Colorado River water. Electricity from Bolder Dam can be used elsewhere and the Democrats lose 55 Electoral College votes.
