Pence: ‘Life Is Winning Again in America’

Friday was the 44th annual March for Life – a pro-life march on Washington that has taken place every year since 1974. This year’s event boasted something that has never happened before: a speech at the event itself by the vice president of the United States of America.

In 1988, President Ronald Reagan spoke remotely to marchers, sharing his support, and President George W. Bush made a recording that was presented to pro-life marchers during his presidency. But having a sitting vice president actually speak at the event itself was a historic move by the White House.

Vice President Pence made it quite clear he was “humbled” to have been able to speak at today’s march, as pro-life action has been a cornerstone of Pence’s campaigns. While governor of Indiana, Pence put into place some of the toughest laws against abortion that the country has seen in the 44 years the procedure has been legal. Pence, along with his wife and daughter, were not only present at the rally today — but were very active.

Pence said in his speech, “Life is winning in America and today is a celebration in that progress. We’ve come to a historic moment in the cause of life and we must approach it with compassion for every American. Life is winning in America because of you.”

President Trump, in one of his tweets, gave his “full support” to demonstrators marching on Washington today, which comes nearly a week after the Women’s March in the capital and its companion marches across the country. Pence said Friday he is proud to serve under a president who stands for the right to life.

Along with Pence, Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, spoke Friday at the march. She garnered tremendous applause when she said she is a wife, a mother, and a Catholic. Conway said it is a “new dawn” for the pro-life movement and she thanked those who turned out to fight for the unborn.

“This is a time of incredible promise for the pro-life and pro-adoption movement,” Conway said. “Our message and our positive action must also reach those women who face unplanned pregnancies. They should know they are not alone. They are not judged. They, too, are protected, and cared for, and celebrated.”

Conway, like Pence, called on those in attendance to protect and promote “the most precious gift in the world: the gift of life.” She called for unity, for others to stand for “babies in the womb.”

“Life is not a privilege, it is not a choice: It is God-given,” Conway continued, as she spoke to demonstrators and protestors. Conway is strongly pro-adoption, citing the action as an option far better than abortion.

The March continues throughout the day as protesters rally for their cause, showing they are pro-life, pro-adoption and, one hopes, pro-unity — as Vice President Pence called for them to be.
