What Americans Really Think About Socialism

Bernie Sanders health care jobs medicare trillion ten years socialismA new Gallup poll confirms what other surveys have reported: A disturbingly high percentage of Americans, about 4 in 10, now look favorably on socialism. Forty-seven percent of Americans even say they would vote for a socialist candidate for president.

What’s going on here? Is Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., that persuasive? Are that many Americans ready to abandon the free enterprise system that has made America the most prosperous nation in human history?

Far from it. The same poll revealed that a majority of Americans, 62%, continue to endorse the free market rather than government when it comes to decisions affecting the economy. A majority also favor free enterprise rather than government control over health care and higher education.

These seemingly contradictory results, Gallup said, reveal that Americans are divided on how to describe the current state of the U.S. economy and determine its future direction. I believe they are divided for the following reasons:

  • Many Americans are still hurting from the Great Recession of 2008 when they lost confidence in the free market and began looking for alternatives like socialism.
  • There is a generational gap with younger Americans accustomed to government playing a major role in their lives and older Americans still quoting Barry Goldwater, “Any government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have.”
  • A powerful trifecta of politicians, educators, and media elite have stepped up their campaign to promote socialism as the answer to America’s economic woes. It is not coincidental that Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., almost won the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination backed as he was by the political-academic-media complex.

This trifecta has been working to turn America into a socialist state since Franklin D. Roosevelt said in a 1932 campaign address: “The first obligation of government is the protection of the welfare and well-being, indeed the very existence of its citizens.” No president had ever before promised such a sweeping responsibility of the federal government.

At the same time, John Dewey and his colleagues at Columbia University were turning out educators committed to “democratic socialism,” an effort reinforced by the same 1960s radicals who are tenured university professors today. And all along a media elite evolved that endorsed a central place for government.

However, all is not lost. There is a powerful counter-establishment committed to the preservation and protection of our free market system and the checks and balances of the Constitution.

Groups including the National Rifle Association, the Right to Work Committee, and the Right to Life Committee exist to counter our politicians. To counter the academy, we have groups like The Heritage Foundation and 65 state think tanks from Maine to California. To counter the media elite, we have Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, The Wall Street Journal, and a burgeoning presence on social media.

The freedom movement has one more priceless asset—the truth. Socialism has been tried in some 40 countries over the past century, and it has failed every time and everywhere. The United Kingdom, India, Denmark, and Israel all tried socialism, and after decades of misery, rejected it.

The truth is that planning leads inevitably to tyranny while free enterprise leads to the American dream.

I believe part of this issue is that when people say “socialism” it means different things to them. For many young people, socialism means what big government liberal policies mean to us older people. The problem is, they will vote for the “socialist” label and end up getting more than they bargined for. In short, it’s good old fashioned ignorance.

Undoubtedly good comments here. Humans looking for ease and security (?) will look toward socialism and get neither.

Socialism = Lost freedom. Most of the college students have been indoctrinated to this bull with the empty promise that they will have everything free. All they hear is the word free. Education, healthcare, pay without work etc. What they don’t mention is how or who will pay for all this free stuff. We will, by paying much higher taxes until the money runs out. Then everyone will be in poverty, that’s were equality comes in. The economy will tank. Much like Venezuela and the other countries socialism has been tried.
America as we know it will cease to exist. Wake up young America! You won’t like the out come. Socialism must not be allowed to exist here.
Keep America Great!
Keep America, America!

Anyone who embraces Socialism has no concept of what it really means. The dumbing down of America and the result of liberal professors teaching our young.

Many Americans do not understand the details of socialism. They do not realize how it failed in mighty countries like Russia. We need to better educate the masses..

If I owned a big company and lived in the USA I would put it on the market for sale and move to my second home out of our Country. This is what Socialism will do to US.If you look at some of the people that are already leaving you will understand why.Our money problems will be even worse then they are now.Look at the free programs we have now that have no money behind them.

The Bankers and legislators have played a significant role since the 2008 recession. They in themselves have manipulated what was a solid set of rules to protect the mortgage industry form fraudulent loan practices that played directly into the collapse of the world economy. Also the overspending of the Government and the Iraqi war effort which was a lie to begin with but I believe it was mostly an effort to stave off the Chinese from going into Iraq and repairing the OIL Fields for Saddam’s regime. It would have given the Chinese a foothold into the Middle East and the western democracies would have been left out in the cold so the oil flow would have been dominated by the Chinese and used as political leverage. So we spent billions of dollars protecting western interest with little to show for it. In the mean time during the Obama admin. we were ramping up to build oil carrying cars and getting ready to frac for oil and then manipulate the oil market to in sure a huge profit for start ups in the oil fields . So here’s the deal we really don’t have a free market when we are always being manipulated by the brokers, government and Bankers. On top of all this I believe in geographic areas where there is significant housing demands and land prices are sky high along with permit fees and shortages of affordable housing with the little or fall back of wages the normal 2 income family has to struggle to make payments on a new home and the rentals are asking as much or more for rent money . To sum it up our system of free market and capitalism has failed to provide protection for Americans in the younger generation so socialism looks to be the next best thing. I don’t agree with this socialism thing but then again when nobody was held accountable for this debacle then we tend to lose faith in the system along with congress not getting their shit together which is another story but plays a role in what the citizens are seeing people will look for different answers to a problem not made by them but by others with power. Also let us face the facts Americans at least 50 % of them haven’t a clue why we are in this situation but tend to find the path of least resistance and go to the politician that gives them hope. Right now Trump is doing a great job to right the ship and could do a lot more if the snake bit democrats would put away their hate and discontent for our President and work towards repairing America to the country it once was .

Too many stupid people actually believe the lies they are told by social media. Too many people are too stupid to check things out. Socialism succeeds until the socialists run out of everyone else’s money to spend. No such thing as a “Free Lunch”.

Socialism NEVER

There are several factors as to why they would vote for a socialist. 1. They’ve never been to a socialist country and really seen how they have to live. 2. They have lived off mom and dad for so long that all the freebies sound good to them. 3. They watch the late night tv shows and the fake news, therefore they have been flooded with bad ideas.
The main thing, and they are not aware of this, they loose their freedom. No offense but I love being an American and living free.

I hope Americans will get out and vote in 2020 and not let socialism takeover! If you want socialism, visit Venezuela or Cuba, see what socialism is really like!

Obviously, a lot of people have ignored the happenings in Venezuela. Electricity every other day or so. Having to boil your tap water every day, no internet, no food in the grocery stores. Your money not worth spit! If this is what you like, go there and stay!
